Pedobear Coupon

MARCH 17--A Florida computer repair business with the unfortunate name “CP Distributor” paid $240 for an ad in a coupon book that was distributed earlier this month.

The company’s ad, seen below, touts the firm’s computer cleaning and diagnostic services. It also includes a graphic of a bear holding a laptop adjacent to the firm’s name (the “CP” is in a larger type size).

The bear pictured, though, is no ordinary mammal. It is actually “Pedobear,” an Internet meme that is shorthand for pedophiles, perverts, child molesters, child porn aficionados, etc. Pedobear, of course, is positioned next to the oversized letters “CP”--the acronym for child pornography.

The advertisement, it appears, was an inside joke by whomever designed it for America’s Favorite Coupon Book, which distributes monthly coupon books in various Florida counties.

The owners of CP Distributor, though, are not laughing. Especially since one of the firm’s principals, records show, happens to be a convicted sex offender who spent seven years in prison for sexually assaulting a child under the age of 12.

Robert Dicks, the ex-con who runs the Lakeland computer repair business with his sister and brother-in-law, told TSG that “we didn’t know anything about the bear or what it was when the coupon book was published.” Dicks, 55, noted that the firm approved the ad before its publication, but stressed, “We’re a legitimate business.”

He said that after his company recently began receiving e-mails complaining about the ad, it contacted the coupon book publisher, which disavowed knowledge about the significance of “Pedobear.” TSG messages seeking comment from Dick Davis and Bruce Hughart, executives with America’s Favorite Coupon Book, were not returned.

[UPDATE: In an interview this afternoon, Hughart, the coupon book’s publisher, claimed that the ad was designed by a female employee in her mid-40s who found the "Pedobear" image online while searching for clip art to include in the CP Distributor coupon. Hughart, who would not identify the designer nor allow a reporter to speak with her, could not explain why the art department employee chose to include a bear, of all things, in a computer firm’s advertisement. Nor could he provide insight as to why the designer chose to put the letters "CP" in a larger type size nestled next to “Pedobear.”

Hughart, who said that 120,000 copies of the March coupon book were printed, said that he was “shocked” to learn of the “Pedobear” meme. He asserted that the use of the image was “as innocent as it can be.”]

When a TSG reporter sought to ask Dicks, pictured in the above mug shot, about his criminal history and sex offender status, he hung up the phone.

But before cutting the interview short, he said that CP Distributor planned to have an ad in the coupon book’s April edition, “but there will be no bear in it.” An updated version of the ad, sans "Pedobear," was found today on the coupon firm's web site (click to view).

Along with the firm’s North Combee Road address and phone number, the coupon book ad includes a second Lakeland address for CP Distributor. That Hendricks Road location is the home of Dicks and his sister and brother-in-law. It is also the address at which Dicks has registered with the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, which maintains the state’s sex offender registry.

Florida state records show that CP Distributor was incorporated last August, with Bernhard Schonaich listed as the company’s president and secretary/treasurer. His wife (and Dicks’s sister), Peggy, is vice president of the computer repair firm. (1 page)

I'm sorry, but, is it too juvenile of me to note that " ex-sex offenders" name is "Dicks"? As well as the coupon company guy being yet another "Dick"? EGAD! They are everywhere!!
Regardless that the employee evidently carries the only known 'Sinless since birth, at will stone casting permitted' card (issued by Jesus Himself), what she did was wrong, extremely unprofessional, and deserves disciplinary action, possibly up to the point of termination. There are plenty of legal avenues this person could very well have exercised to 'warn' the innocent public of this monster other than her employer's business and credibility. Personally, I would not use the services of either business, the parts store because I don't need them, I build my own systems and buy from a couple well known online retailers, (but now that the rock lady is working at Advertising Criminal Pasts Through Coupons, or ACPTC, no way in hell), and the coupon book people because rock lady might find some unlawful or criminal activity from my past (I got a ticket for doing 81 mph once) and plaster it all over my ad, not knowing that pictures of a squad car with lights flashing , a 55 mph sign with a slash through it and a speedometer that reads 120mph wasn't normal advertising media for a landscaping company. What if you had an affair that caused your divorce, would it be ok if Mz Stone Throwing Executioner referenced that in your ad she designed for you in her employer's coupon book? Why not...if it was true, hell yeah she should be warning other people you're a cheater, deceptive, untrustworthy... In other words. She IS WRONG. No matter how evil that piece of filth is.
The artist can't just pull any image off the web for use without permission. She would most likely know that, or else this coupon company is likely to face recurring legal battles over copyright infringement. That makes this even more incriminating to me. She knew very well what she was doing.

soooo ... what DOES the CP stand for?
Too much of a coincidence. But why would a coupon publisher print this without first getting an ok from the customer? If he did, they may be covered; if they didn't this company has a libel case against them regardless of the artist's intent. Regardless of how you feel about this man's past the publisher had no right to conduct business this way. I wouldn't do business with them, and if the intent was malicious they should be sued. That's no way to run a business. They need a wake-up call.
She's a jerk that deserves to be fired if she really meant to use that pedobear on purpose, and I think she did. The guy served 7 years behind bars. If they let him out, he should be allowed to start a new life as long as he's not breaking laws. That woman interfered with that. I hate pedos, but I also hate drug dealers that sell to kids (or anyone), and I hate thieves, bank robbers, murderers, people who beat people and so on. It's not ok to destroy his business and call out to the public like that. If he were a past drug dealer, is it ok to take his ad and put a marijuana leaf, or cocaine bowl on it? What if he shot someone 10 years back. Maybe put some artwork to suggest that? If we warned about every criminal like that there would be dozens of ads that show peoples past offenses. I guess we could all agree not to accept services from past criminals, but then that would leave less services and a LOT of people out of work. -- There was no reason to put a cartoon bear on a business about computer parts. She's guilty and deserves punishment. He, however does not. I would have fired her pronto. If no one orders computer parts from his store after this, he'd have a case against her.
Whoa, whoa, whoa! SHE'S a jerk? Give me a break. He's a child rapist. I know I personally wouldn't want to do business with a sex offender. I don't blame her for trying to warn others. You think because he "served his time" that he deserves a fresh start? Do you think that child he brutally raped got one of those? No, that kid has carried that nightmare with them all of their life. Let me guess -- because YOU served your time for your sex crime, you think all perverts deserve forgiveness? Give me a break. The prison sentences these disgusting excuses for human beings get are a joke. You can't rehab a sex offender, anyway. I'm sure that wasn't his first offense and it will not be his last. They should all just be shot to save the government the money on housing them.
And you know EXACTLY what this guy has done right? What happened, when, and in detail. I'm not saying that he hasn't done anything... but as I've seen people put on sex offender registry for urinating on a corner of a street, I'll be a little bit more careful on going on a rampage. Again I don't want to bee seen as a Pedophile defender, but careful on what you infer from a sentence in a newspaper article.
There are really no gray areas in child rape.
Um, yes, we know what this guy has done because they posted a link to the man's predator flyer. Two counts of "LEWD, LASCIVIOUS CHILD U/16," and 1 count of "SEX BAT BY ADULT/VCTM UNDER 12." Hi, that means child rape. Hurr durr. http://www.thesmokinggun.com/file/pedobear-coupon?page=0
HOLY CRAP!!! This is some creepy crap right here because.... when I was 16 my 27 y-o boyfriend lived on Hendricks Rd. I know exactly where this is! My pedophile ex probably hung out with this guy. Too damn funny. All these years later I think, what the hell was I thinking??? But then again I was the child. :D This is toooo funny.
Bob Dicks - born to fail
Is that his name or a description of what he does for fun????
"Child Porn Distributor?" "CP Distributor?" I think this guy thought he was being really clever advertising his CP business.
Also, check out the reverse image lookup on that pedobear. You can see who is using that image.
"the ad was designed by a female employee in her mid-40s who found the "Pedobear" image online ... Hughart... could not explain why the art department employee chose to include a bear, of all things, in a computer firm’s advertisement. Nor could he provide insight as to why the designer chose to put the letters "CP" in a larger type size nestled next to “Pedobear.”" I think she did all that because she's *awesome*.
I wholeheartedly concur!
Oh brother, Robert Dicks' last name isn't helping him, either. I think the employee knew he was a pedophile and that's why she included that bear and the CP beside it. Very clever of her. And hmmm, more irony.....the executives of the coupon company are Dick Davis (not that he's one like Robert Dicks is) and Bruce Hughart. Hughart....now, wouldn't that be a good name for a Teddy bear? Thank you, TSG for running such great reports for us to critique.
