After stealing armfuls of clothing from a Tommy Hilfiger store, Ramiya Johnson, 23, and a female sidekick ran out an emergency exit and fled Thursday evening in a Cadillac Escalade driven by a male accomplice, Florida police report.
Following an alert issued for the SUV, a cop pulled over the vehicle two hours after the heist at an outlet mall in Orlando, according to an arrest affidavit. Inside the getaway car police found four “Tommy Hilfiger shopping bags filled with clothes.”
Investigators estimated that the stolen merchandise--which still had anti-theft sensors in place--was worth in excess of $750 (but less than $5000).
In addition to the garments in the shopping bags, cops noticed that Johnson and Kelah Hoffman, 26, “were both wearing Tommy Hilfiger shirts.” As seen above, Johnson’s "Essential Logo" polo actually still had its Hilfiger hang tag (and $59.99 price tag) attached to the collar.
During police questioning, Johnson reportedly confessed to the Hilfiger theft, claiming that Hoffman offered her $50 to participate in the retail larceny. Hoffman declined to answer questions about the theft. Driver Frank Germain, 50, told cops that he was paid to pick up the women and “drive them for the afternoon.” While acknowledging he saw the merchandise in the SUV, Germain said he “did not question it.”
In addition to the Hilfiger clothing, police noted, “multiple items were found with tags from Marshalls” inside the Escalade.
Johnson, Hoffman, and Germain were arrested and charged with burglary, grand theft, and retail theft, all felonies. Johnson, who was also charged with a misdemeanor count for allegedly providing a fake name to police, is being held in the Orange County jail in lieu of $5450 bond.
Johnson, who lives in an Orlando suburb, is also facing prosecution in a separate 2021 case for grand theft auto. Johnson has been charged with stealing a car that she drove to a January meeting with her probation officer. She is being supervised in connection with a narcotics possession conviction. (2 pages)
