Woman Pleads To Sex Attack On Sleeping Man

MAY 15--The Seattle woman charged with raping a man while he slept has pleaded guilty to the attack and will serve nine months in jail and be required to register as a sex offender, according to court records.

In a deal with prosecutors, Chantae Gilman copped Wednesday to attempted rape and assault, both felonies. Gilman, 28, was originally charged with rape, but an amended criminal information reduced that count.

Gilman, pictured above, is scheduled to be sentenced on June 19. In addition to jail time and registering as a sex offender, Gilman’s plea deal requires her to serve two years probation upon release from custody and it forbids her from contacting the 32-year-old victim (who is only identified by his initials, “M.O.,” in court papers).

In statements included as part of the plea deal, Gilman acknowledged that she “made a substantial step to have sexual intercourse with M.O.” and that the victim “did not consent to the sexual contact” since he “was asleep and unable to consent” during the June 2013 attack inside his Seattle apartment

According to a Seattle Police Department report, “M.O.” told cops that he did not know Gilman, but said that she was an acquaintance of a man who lived in his duplex. 

On the evening of the assault, the victim told police, he attended a birthday party for the neighbor whom Gilman knew. “Once arriving home he fell asleep on his bed,” Detective Roger Ishimitsu reported. “Victim slept very hard due to a long day.”

Around 2 AM, “M.O.” awoke to find the 240-pound Gilman on top of him. The victim told cops that his erect penis was inside Gilman, who had pinned his hands over his head. “M.O.” said that after Gilman ignored demands to get off him, he was “able to work his way out from underneath" her.

During police questioning, Gilman denied being in the victim’s home or having sex with him. Court and police records do not indicate how Gilman got into the man’s apartment. Gilman told investigators that she “has a mental illness and suffers from Bipolar disorder and Psychosis,” Ishimitsu reported.

As part of the plea deal, prosecutors will recommend to Gilman’s sentencing judge that she be barred from using or possessing alcohol or “non-prescribed drugs.” In Facebook posts last year, Gilman wrote of struggling with substance abuse.

Gilman’s rap sheet dates back 15 years and includes convictions for attempted robbery, attempted forgery, theft, and possession of a stolen vehicle. When she was arrested last September for attacking “M.O.,” Gilman was pregnant with her third child.

Gilman’s felony plea comes a month after a Texas grand jury declined to indict a woman who was arrested last year for breaking into the home of a friend of her husband’s and sexually assaulting the man while he slept. (5 pages)
