Parole Denied For Son Of Sam

Imprisoned "Son of Sam" killer David Berkowitz was denied release today following his initial appearance before the New York State parole board. The 49-year-old Berkowitz was convicted of murdering six people during a killing spree that ended with his capture in 1977. In the parole board's decision, which you'll find below, two commissioners noted Berkowitz's "positive program accomplishments and improved behavior" during his 25 years behind bars, but added that "discretionary release at this time would deprecate the seriousness of these atrocious crimes and diminish respect for the law." In a March letter to New York Governor George Pataki, Berkowitz wrote that he was "disappointed that there is even going to be a parole hearing," which is required by law. Berkowitz added that he had "absolutely no interest in parole" and believed "that I deserve to be in prison for the rest of my life." (4 pages)
