Director Seeks To Cut Wife's "Matrix" Money

CONFESSION: Green River Killer's chilling statement

NOVEMBER 3--On second thought, the co-creator of the "Matrix" trilogy has determined that he actually came up with the idea for the films shortly before his 1993 marriage, so his estranged wife is not entitled to the financial benefits of the wildly lucrative movies. Claiming that a July court declaration was "inaccurate," Larry Wachowski now contends that, "after investigation, my memory is refreshed and I am positive" that he and brother Andy "created 'The Matrix Trilogy' before my marriage to Petitioner." In October 1993, Wachowski married Thea Bloom, who filed for divorce in Los Angeles Superior Court last December. Wachowski's revised declaration, a copy of which you'll find below, was drafted after settlement talks with Bloom ceased and he revisited the "separate property" question. The distinction, of course, is critical, since the Matrix films--the final installment of which opens Wednesday--have grossed more than a billion dollars. Until settlement talks cratered, "I thought I could settle this entire action without paying attention to the year 1993," Wachowski stated, adding that he once believed the date of his marriage was "irrelevant" to his divorce case. It now appears, however, that timing is everything when it comes to the reclusive Wachowski's desire to shield his loot. (6 pages)
