MARCH 26--Rock the Vote, which recruits celebrities to try and convince young people to register to vote and get involved in the political process, announced yesterday that singer Lenny Kravitz has recorded an anti-war song that's now available exclusively on the group's web site. But when it comes to Kravitz's own voting history, the 38-year-old singer--like many previous Rock the Vote celebrity spokespersons--is hardly a role model. As the below records show, Kravitz registered to vote in New York City in October 1992, giving a Soho address as his residence. He voted in that year's general election (Clinton vs. Bush, etc.), but hasn't been seen since in a Gotham polling place. In fact, Board of Elections records show that Kravitz's registration was placed in an "inactive" status in December 1999 (where it remains today). Since the rock star has also lived in Miami Beach (where he bought a $8.95 million home in October 2001) and Los Angeles, TSG checked with election boards in Dade County and L.A., but neither agency had a record of Kravitz ever being registered in its respective locale. Kravitz's new song, "We Want Peace," is "an urgent call...for America to be a peaceful leader in the world," according to Rock the Vote, which refers to the musician as a "true patriot." Kravitz wrote and performed the song with Kazem Al Sahir, one of Iraq's leading pop music artists. Through a spokesperson, Kravitz acknowledged to TSG that, "I haven't voted in many years and it was a mistake. Up until recently many people like myself have taken this right for granted and now more than ever it is time to voice our opinions." (2 pages)
