Tampa Tribune Struck By Lightning

JUNE 8--In another fabulous newspaper screw-up, a Florida newspaper today printed a lead editorial saluting the Tampa Bay Lightning's valiant--but unsuccessful--bid to best the Calgary Flames for hockey's Stanley Cup. Unfortunately for the Tampa Tribune, the Lightning actually beat the Flames, 2-1, last night for the NHL crown. Seems that the paper had prepared two editorials in advance of the final game's conclusion and mistakenly published the one (a copy of which you'll find below) bemoaning how the team "fell one game short in the 16-victory Stanley Cup marathon." The hockey editorial, which ran above a piece on stem cell research, saluted the Lightning for bringing "fellowship and joy to our community--no small accomplishment. Thanks Lightning. You've made us proud." In an apology posted on the Tribune's web site, editorial page boss Rosemary Goudreau wrote that the paper took a "puck in the gut this morning." The Florida paper's mistake came eight months after the New York Post bemoaned a Boston Red Sox victory in the American League Championship Series--which, of course, the Yankees actually won. (1 page)
