When Dogs Are Mules
DEA: Colombian smugglers implanted heroin packets in pure-bred pups
FEBRUARY 1--Nothing too unusual for the Drug Enforcement Administration to bust a gaggle of smugglers trying to get heroin into the U.S. by hiding it in aerosol cans or in the lining of luggage. Heck, we've seen people hide drugs in some amazing places in our time. But today in New York, the DEA released the below photos of the latest Colombian drug mules--puppies who were implanted with packets of liquid heroin. According to the DEA, the six cute and furry couriers--all pure-bred--had the heroin packets surgically placed inside them. The 22 arrests announced today are the culmination of a two-year investigation in which drugs from Colombia were distributed along the East Coast from Miami to New York City. (1 page)
