Son's Stew Heist

DECEMBER 8--A New Mexico man broke into his mother’s home and stole a pot of her homemade stew, according to police who have charged him with burglary.

As alleged in a criminal complaint, Jonathan Ray, 23, last week swiped the stew, known as posole, from the refrigerator in his mother’s Albuquerque home.

Ray’s mother, Angela Becenti, told cops that her son entered her home around 11 PM--against her wishes--and “went straight to the fridge and grabbed a pot of posole that she had made.”

Ray then “ran towards the back door carrying the pot of Posole and left,” the complaint alleges.

Days before the stew heist, Becenti called police to have Ray removed from her property after she discovered that he was “setting up a camp in her garage.” An Albuquerque Police Department investigator noted that Becenti “does not want him back and he is not allowed in her home.”

Ray, pictured above, was arrested Sunday for felony burglary and booked into the Bernalillo County jail.

The criminal complaint does not address the whereabouts of the purloined posole, nor does it attach a monetary value to the traditional Mexican dish. (2 pages)
