Harriet Miers Withdraws
Supreme Court nominee bows out, cites Senate document grab
OCTOBER 27--Here is the letter Harriet Miers sent today to President George W. Bush withdrawing her nomination for the Supreme Court. Though her qualifications have come under fire from conservatives, Miers only cited the efforts of "members of the Senate" to seek documents generated while she served as Bush's White House counsel. "I have steadfastly maintained that the independence of the Executive Branch be preserved and its confidential documents and information not be released to further a confirmation process." Bush "reluctantly accepted" Miers's withdrawal, according to a White House statement. Unlike prior correspondence to Bush, Miers used no exclamation points in her withdrawal letter. (1 page)
