Greetings From Phil Spector
Accused murderer typed lewd postcard insult about L.A. prosecutor
JUNE 26--When a guy's been indicted for murder, he can be expected to direct a little venom toward the prosecutor seeking to jail him for life. Which is what Phil Spector did in a postcard he sent two years ago to a New York record executive. In an April 2005 missive to Allen Klein, Spector took a lewd swipe at Los Angeles District Attorney Steve Cooley (and the D.A.'s mother). Click on the front of the postcard, which you'll find below, to see what Spector typed (!) on the reverse side. When courttv.com reporter Harriet Ryan today asked Spector lawyer Roger Rosen about the postcard, he said there are 'others who would say a lot worse things about the D.A. if they were in his position.' Klein, a music publisher and former business manager for the Beatles and the Rolling Stones, is a longtime business associate and confidante of the 67-year-old Spector, who is currently on trial for the alleged 2003 murder of B-movie actress Lana Clarkson. The postcard, signed 'Phillip,' was written shortly after Klein's son Jody attended an engagement party for Spector and Rachelle Short (the couple married last year). Additionally, Spector makes reference to Klein being at a recent New York Knicks game, though the sighting was likely via the television, as Klein's season tickets are situated right behind the home team's bench. At Spector's trial, former girlfriend Dorothy Melvin recently testified about a 1993 incident during which he pistol-whipped her and ordered her at gunpoint to undress. She later testified that, for years after the gun episode, Spector would mail her greeting cards and postcards, one of which featured two baby raccoons cuddling underneath the words 'I miss hanging out.'
