Bidding Leona Adieu

AUGUST 21--As tributes trickle in for Leona Helmsley, the late hotel magnate who died yesterday at age 87, it somehow seems appropriate to eulogize the 'Queen of Mean' with the words of federal probation officer Kenneth Greenblatt. In advance of her sentencing on a felony income tax evasion conviction, Helmsley was interviewed by Greenblatt, who subsequently produced a confidential presentence report (a copy of which you'll find below). The document provides a detailed account of Helmsley's life, from her impoverished Brooklyn upbringing to her marriage to real estate mogul Harry Helmsley (with whom she shared a Manhattan penthouse and a 30-acre Connecticut estate dubbed Dunnellen Hall). The report notes that Helmsley left school at 13 to work and help support her family financially. At the time Greenblatt's report was prepared in late-1989, Helmsley's net worth was listed at $392 million. (12 pages)
