Man busted for lying to cops about stolen Oprah tix
Meet Robert Spearing.
The 44-year-old Canadian yesterday was in Chicago with his wife to attend one of the final, star-studded taping of the Oprah Winfrey Show.
But after discovering that the 13,000 tickets to Winfrey’s “Farewell Spectacular” at the United Center had already been given away in a lottery--and afraid of letting down his wife--Spearing concocted a story that he was attacked and robbed of his seats.
According to a complaint filed in Cook County Circuit Court, Spearing claimed to police that he “had been beaten up and injured and that his tickets to Oprah Winfrey Show had been stolen.”
After being treated for minor injuries, however, Spearing admitted to fabricating the incident. He told investigators that he “inflicted his own injuries by cutting his forehead with a rock and scraped his hands.” He did this, Spearing explained, “so he would not disappoint his wife for not getting the tickets.”
The phony assault claim, the complaint notes, resulted in “numerous police officers…looking for alleged offenders of the robbery.”
The devoted husband was charged with disorderly conduct and making a false police report, a felony. He is being held in the Cook County Jail in lieu of $20,000 bond. Spearing is next due in court on May 24. (1 page)
