Terry McMillan Sues Her "Little Fag" Ex
MARCH 22--In the latest chapter of Terry McMillan's legal battle with her ex-husband, the best-selling author yesterday filed a $40 million lawsuit charging him with conspiring to destroy her reputation during their contentious divorce and subsequent legal actions. McMillan's complaint against Jonathan Plummer (and his lawyer Dolores Sargent) follows recent restraining order applications filed by both sides in California's Contra Costa Superior Court. As seen on the following pages, McMillan, 55, and Plummer allege that finalization of the couple's divorce did not lead to a cessation of hostilities. In one court filing, Plummer, 32, included transcripts of profanity-laced messages left last year by McMillan on his answering machine. McMillan refers to her ex as a 'little fag' who is a 'common fucking criminal, a common extortionist.' She also claims to have contacted the FBI about purported crimes committed by Plummer and discussed matters with former President Bill Clinton and congresswoman Maxine Waters. For her part, McMillan filed a September 2006 declaration accusing Plummer of a variety of 'insidious things...done to provoke and incite my anger.' In a second declaration, she alleged that Plummer was threatening to 'punish' her if she did not pay him hush money. McMillan added that, fearing for her safety, she had hired a security guard to protect her Bay Area home. 'I don't want to be a human casualty, like most women who seek protection and fail to get it until after it is too late.' The couple's six-year marriage cratered when Plummer told McMillan that he was gay. In a December 17, 2004 letter to McMillan, Plummer thanked her for 'being so understanding for what I had to tell you about myself.' That supposed understanding, though, did not last for long, according to a series of blistering divorce court filings. McMillan, author of 'How Stella Got Her Groove Back' and 'Waiting to Exhale,' met Plummer during a 1995 vacation in Jamaica. Their courtship is at the heart of the fictionalized 'Stella.' McMillan claims that Plummer married her in a bid for financial support and U.S. citizenship, which he gained in 2005. She also accused him of fraudulently hiding his homosexuality to induce her into marriage. (12 pages)
